Pandora the cat is 'exemplary,' detailed performance review says Pandora the cat is 'exemplary,' detailed performance review says If you look in the staff directory of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, in between names of academic researchers, you’ll see a photo of a non-human:  Pandora the cat.Yes, Pandora is as important as the other staff. Her staff identification  card  reads “VALID: all nine lives.” She has served (with honor) as the school’s mascot for the past 18 years.Her hard work of meowing, napping on laps, and keeping researchers company in the Member Saloni has paid off. This past February, her supervisor, Dylan Rogers, who is the assistant director at the ASCSA, gave her the performance review every worker strides for: “Exemplary.”You can read the full review, on official letterhead, here. A collegial  co-workerRogers talked with Ladders about what compelled him to write a performance review for a cat. “We play it up because she’s everyone’s favorite part of the school,” he said. “She’s always here, always saying hello. She’s usually at the front desk, so when [visitors] come, she’s the first person they see.”On her origin story, Rogers surmised that “she was probably a stray. We get a lot of strays in Athens.”A blurb announcing new staff back in 2001 suggests that Pandora  arrived on the school compound one day and never left: “after a concerted effort on her part, the persistent feline won the hearts of nearly everyone at the School.” Once adopted, the school held a naming contest, which earned her the name Pandora. Pandora waits for a raiseRogers took the performance review very seriously.“I am sorry that you did not fill out your Self-Evaluation form for this year’s Performance Review. It would have been nice for us to have a written record of your own thoughts and suggestions,” Rogers wrote. “While  we did not schedule an interview  to meet in my office, you certainly made your opinions known to me every time I walked past you (when you are not sleeping). In last year’s performance review, I asked to stop scratching our colleagues at the Front Desk, which you have accomplished. You are helping to create a respectful and caring work environment.”Rogers also noted her strong work ethic of staying in the office “even on the weekends!” Her collegiality was also appreciated: “those who come into the Member Saloni are greeted with an occasional ‘meow,’ or in the very least, a casual nod of approval.”Still, like all of us, Pandora must prove herself before she gets a raise. P andora’s suggestion for fresh fish every week was “noted,” but would need to be discussed with the Administration. Good with facesMost of the staff at ASCSA are Greek and they tolerate and love her to a certain degree, but it’s the U.S. academics far away from home missing their own pets who have  â€œcome to love Pandora” and can be seen chatting with her.“Pandora will remember people even if they come once a year,” Rogers said about Pandora’s superb skill in remembering which members gave her treats.Present in meetings“It’s nice to have her around. It makes life a little easier,” Rogers said about the cat that patrols the school’s gardens and hallways because she  is “concerned  for the safety and security of the premises.”This makes sense as there are unseen physical and mental health benefits to pet ownership. “Lower blood pressure and higher resilience to heart attacks” has been found among pet owners. In the high-pressure of academic institutions, it can be soothing to have an animal purr your worries away.This is why other cats have also found good jobs. Oreo, also a black-and-white cat, acts as receptionist in a nursing home and has similarly impressive accomplishments.Flexible to  changes in her scheduleEveryday work situations  like moving offices can be stressful. When Pandora had to change offices after spending 15 years in the Wiener Lab, it was a little “jarring” for her but she rallied, and can usually be seen on her throne in the Member Saloni: a soft plaid chair.That’s a  lesson of flexibility that can be passed down from cat to human: work hard, make yourself indispensable, and remember to make it very clear that your work should be paid adequately, whether in money or in treats.

How to Defend Your Job to Your Boss - The Muse How to Defend Your Job to Your Boss Imagine this: You’ve worked at an established company for several years. You know most of the staff and executive team, and have even been promoted for your hard work and contributions. Then, one day you learn that the organization’s about to implement major structural changes that could change how your department’s run and jeopardize your job security. Layoffs seem inevitable, right? Well, what if you had the opportunity to defend your job in a brief presentation? Yes, it’s a rare occurrence that doesn’t come around often in these situations, but it does exist. I know because it happened to me. So, trust me that if you’re put in this situation, it’s pretty important for you to know how to handle it. After all, your job’s on the line here. Step 1: Get Into a Positive Mindset OK, so you’ve thought through all your options and decided that you want to stay. Sure there’s a ton of upheaval, but at the end of the day, you love your job and you’d hate to lose it. Great, that’s a big decision to come to. Now’s the even harder part, staying positive when everything’s (and everyone’s) falling apart around you. No matter if your company’s restructuring, shifting priorities, or introducing new management, big changes almost always guarantee discussion among employees. And it’s rarely uplifting and filled with inspirational thoughts. So while it’s easy to get caught up in the gossip or allow low morale to dictate your behavior at the office, it’s essential that you rise above it to maintain your reputation- and position. To do this, you’re going to need to reflect on your time at the company. What have been your major accomplishments? Favorite projects? Milestones? Take a step back from your experience (and away from your desk and the office) to remind yourself of positive moments. Make a list, look at it, and remember that you do like it there. (And if you have trouble making this list, maybe you shouldn’t be fighting so hard.) Second, eliminate emotion from the equation. Not forever, but definitely for right now. You want to stay as upbeat as possible and work hard not to take anything too personally. Easier said than done, but consider that your mantra during this transition. Because when you’re feeling confident and (mostly) free of negativity, that’s the ideal time to take next steps. Step 2: Prepare Your Talking Points So, your role’s on the line. Your company decision-makers aren’t quite sold on the importance of your position- or that you’re the right person to do it. Couldn’t an intern do it? Couldn’t it be automated? Now’s your time to show them that isn’t the case, that they’d be making a mistake by letting you go. While your first instinct may be to appeal to emotions (or the fact your rent doesn’t pay itself), the people who will be deciding your future aren’t doing that. They’re likely looking at numbers and hard facts. So that’s what you need to do, too. Draft a document that highlights your accomplishments and how they’ve benefitted the business. Be sure to include: Milestones: Pull from your resume and review past projects and victories. Whenever possible, tie them to numbers and growth. Positive feedback or testimonials: Ask colleagues for references or cherry-pick glowing commentary from past performance reviews. Things you want to accomplish in the future: Consider where and how you see yourself contributing to the business moving forward. And, just like any other public speaking situation, you should rehearse. More so than many other public speaking situations, you really need to present with confidence. The idea of making a case could make anyone nervous. But you want to come off as someone who’s 100% sure of her value. Step 3: Make Your Case OK, so now it’s go-time. You’ve scheduled a meeting with the decision-makers and arrive ready to reclaim your job security. Here’s how to present in a way that is as polished and professional as you are. You’ve got this. Print out one copy of your talking points and inform your meeting attendee(s) that it’s simply for you to reference your main ideas. Then, offer to send them the document once the meeting has ended so they can review as needed. This helps your listeners pay closer attention and prevents them from skimming ahead while you make your case. Then, reinforce your enthusiasm for the job right away. You want to immediately make your claim to show respect for the executive’s time while also proving that you know exactly what you want out of the meeting. Try something like: “First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. These past few weeks have really allowed me to step back and reflect on my time at the company as [job title]. I’ve even revisited past contributions and milestones during my time here- which I will discuss with you shortly- and has only confirmed how much I love my job and will do what it takes to keep it.” Next, showcase your research. Provide an overview of the past contributions, current projects, and future aspirations you assembled to prove you can reflect, stay productive, and think long-term even during a transitional stage. The key here is to speak factually as it pertains to the business, rather than boast about how great you are. Finally, summarize and restate your main point: You’re here for a reason and it would benefit both parties if it stayed that way. Don’t forget to send a follow-up thank you note or email after all is said and done. Based on the conversation, you may want to ask for an addendum or revision to your employee contract. Be certain to save any written correspondence- including all of your job highlights. Those can be great to add to a personal site, resume, or LinkedIn page. Phew! Now it may sound daunting, but I promise: Defending your job makes you a stronger, more confident employee and professional overall. If nothing else, you’ve had a chance to review your many accomplishments and work on your presentation and public speaking skills. And who can say no to that?

5 Futuristic Flying Innovations 5 Futuristic Flying Innovations Innovation-wise, the Experimental Aircraft Associations AirVenture 2013 (The Oshkosh Airshow, Oshkosh, WI) was a little bit glitzy and a little bit green. The squadron of future-forward flying machines descending on the self-proclaimed Worlds Greatest Aviation Celebration July 29-August 4 represented the general aviation industrys dual embrace of sensationalism and sustainability as the wind beneath its wings. Planes powered by alternative fuels, a plane you can park in your garage, and a virtually plane-less flying daredevil billed as Jetman were all on display for a mostly plain-clothes crowd of 500,000. The traditional presence of active military planes and flyers was missing this year due to sequestration, but that only freed up more air time for the industry to showcase its flight pattern for the future. Anticipating worrisome trends in the future of general aviation as fewer civilians invest in the time and expense of flight school and licensure, many of the 821 vendors at Oshkosh rolled out innovations that would address the industrys reliance on dirty, expensive fuels and rekindle the publics fascination with flying as a lifestyle. Here are five of the highest-flying technical attractions at this years show. Get the Lead Out Long forbidden in the automotive world, lead-containing gasoline is still used to fuel small airplanes such as those used in pilot training. Along with its cloudy emissions ratings, todays sky-high energy prices have pushed up the cost of the common aviation gas known as 100 low-lead (100LL) to about $6 per gallon. According to Aviat Aircraft, Inc. (Afton, WY), thats pushing flight school tuition ever higher and thats having a downstream effect on the future pipeline of licensed pilots. At Oshkosh, Aviat launched a new proof-of-concept plane that could be a natural solution. A modified version of Aviats industry-standard Husky A-1C single-engine taildragger debuted as the industrys first piston-powered dual-fuel plane that burns either 100LL or compressed natural gas (CNG). CNG has significantly higher octane levels than 100LL, produces 90% less smog particles, and cuts carbon dioxide emissions by a third. Because the CNG engine runs cooler, oil stays cleaner longer and helps extend engine life. With only slight modifications to its standard design, the Husky lets a pilot switch between 100LL and CNG tanks, allowing the pilot to select the most efficient mode for the situation at hand. The belly-mounted CNG tank and other fuel system components add about 135 pounds to the Huskys overall weight, but that is expected to drop rapidly as the natural gas industry perfects new, lightweight composite tanks. Aviat developed the technology in collaboration with the Aviation Foundation of America, which says it could help flight schools reduce their fuel costs by 80%. Fly-In Flicks Although not an aviation innovation per se, Oshkosh organizers have rigged up a creative evening entertainment option for visiting private pilots who arent quite ready to leave the cockpit at the end of the day. The festivals Fly-In Theater reimagines the classic American drive-in movie format for the winged world. Action and aircraft-themed movies flash across its five-story outdoor screen before rows and rows of small planes and popcorn-munching pilots. This year, attendees got an early peak at Disneys Planes. Terrafugias Transition spreading its wings. Image: Terrafugia Street Legal One of the biggest hits of Oshkosh was the debut of Terrafugias Transition, a small airplane that doubles as a street-legal automobile. The company says it can switch between flying and driving modes in less than a minute and, despite a 26.6-ft. wingspan, can fit in a one-car garage thanks to electromechanically folding wings. The Transition has the distinctions of being the only light aircraft designed to meet federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and the only car equipped with a full-vehicle parachute. It tops out a 100 mph in the air with a range of about 400 miles. On the highway, the Transition manages decent fuel economy with 35 miles per gallon. Although stratospherically priced at $279,000, Terrafugia believes it will find a niche with practical benefits eliminating the need for ground transportation to and from an airport. Safety is another pro, as pilots faced with bad weather have the option of landing and driving to their destination. Human Fly Nothing represents the pinnacle of practical, individual human flight more than a jet pack. The elusive technology for controlled open-air flight may still be in the distance, but dont tell Jetman. Hes been jumping out of helicopters for the past five years, using a four-engine carbon-Kevlar jetwing to power a 150-mph controlled fall to Earth. Jetmans secret identity is French pilot Yves Rossy, who doubles as the human fuselage of this jet-pack-esque technology. Using body movements to maneuver and a handheld throttle to control thrust, Rossy has performed numerous high-profile stunts for his corporate sponsor Breitling luxury watches. 3-D rendering of Quicksilver EMG electric motor glider. Image: Electricmotorglider.com Gliding in Style On another front in the battle to lower the cost and expand the possibilities of private flight, the Quicksilver EMG electric motor glider is taking shape as a more versatile addition to the ultralight class. The team from Tangent Aircraft (Corning, CA) previewed its prototype for an aircraft for the masses a safe single-seat $10,000 flyer that owners can upgrade to carry a passenger as their skills increase. The lowest-cost version would be sold as a kit that conforms to federal aviation requirements that amateur aircraft be assembled mostly by the owner. As an ultralight, the single-seat configuration is not subject to FAA flight regulations, enabling new flyers to get their wings on their own terms. If and when they decide they would like to haul a passenger, they can re-register the craft as an experimental light aircraft and add a second seat for passengers. The company views that as a solution to the high cost of pilot training. The electric training paradigm is actually a perfect market for electric aircraft, says Tangent CEO Brian Carpenter, citing the suitability for battery power for missions of about an hour such as the typical flight lesson. He says the initial versions are adapting technologies for motors, controllers, propellers, telemetry, and control systems from off-the-shelf products for radio-controlled model planes to minimize RD costs. From Engineer to Entrepreneur From Engineer to Entrepreneur Steven L. Reid founded Industrial Environmental Systems in Marietta, Georgia, in 2001. With a BSE from the University of Alabama-Birmingham and an MEPP from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Reid has been an engineering professional for over 30 years. He recognized his entrepreneurial inclination at an early age. As a teenager I preferred working at odd jobs like mowing lawns and doing day work, as opposed to having a steady job at, say, a grocery store, he says. In engineering school, I was a cooperative-education student. I worked at a large research laboratory and that experience taught me I did not want to be a one-dimensional engineer. After a 20-year career with an engineering firm in Atlanta, serving as engineering manager and chief operating officer, Reid still felt unfulfilled because he was not in a position to make important, strategic decisions for the company. As a result, he followed his entrepreneurial yearning to start his own companya contract manufacturer of stacks, ductwork, pollution control, and noise control systemswhere he (happily) calls all the shots every day. In this interview, Reid talks about the business skills that engineers need to be a successful entrepreneur. Steve, looking back as an engineer and owner of your own company, how did your education prepare you to be an entrepreneur? First, I earned a BSE degree. As a foundation, that degree gave me equal amounts of electrical, materials, mechanical, and civil engineering courses. Then I enrolled in the MBA program immediately after completing my BSE. I worked as a sales (application) engineer during the day and attended business classes in the evening. There were no executive MBAs back then so I had to complete seven foundation courses including accounting, management, operations management, economics, marketing, and statistics. Although I did not finish my MBA, these courses gave me an excellent technology-based entrepreneur background. In general, what would you say are an engineers weaknesses when it comes to being an entrepreneur? Two highly valued strengths of engineers can actually become weaknesses; intelligence and precision. Engineers are highly intelligent and can become frustrated when others with whom they interact are not as knowledgeable about their subject (entrepreneurs need to be flexible and patient). Engineers also value precise solutions that sometimes may not be worth the effort, time, or money necessary to complete (entrepreneurs sometimes need to make quick decisions and cant wait for precise solutions). Engineers also tend to devalue soft skills or visionary thinking. They may also resist change once on a given paththey want to finish something, even if it adds no more value. How is the field of engineering changing regarding entrepreneurship? The field of engineering is becoming more multidisciplinary. For example, UW-Madisons Masters in Engineering and Professional Practice (MEPP) degree teaches engineering management skills such as accounting, leadership, international relations, quality management, communication skills, and researchall vital skills for being an entrepreneur and establishing and running your own business. Does being entrepreneurial make you a better engineer? Key aspects to being entrepreneurial are vision and opportunity. Being entrepreneurial allows an engineer to be more strategic in a project or in an organization. This means he or she can wear different hats and contribute in multiple ways. Being involved at multiple, cross-disciplinary levels can give an engineer a broader perspective on the end result of the project, sometimes resulting in engineering insights and decisions that improve the final product. Although an entrepreneur is generally defined as an individual, a group or an organization can also be entrepreneurial. Just as an individual can add other disciplines to his/her technical base, groups can do the same. When individuals of different skills come together and collaborate to pursue a common goal, the team can be entrepreneurial. This is also a good time to be an entrepreneur. With the globalization of business and the uncertain economy, there are plenty of opportunities to evaluate and pursue. So, the global economy, with its chaos and disarray, is actually a target-rich environment for technology-based entrepreneurs.
